In order to apply the lastest ultra-long-range AAMs, the Mikoyan OKB started to develop a new version named the Mig-31M under the joint directive issued of the Communist Party Central Committee and the Council of Ministers. The new design applied made the Mig-31M can be easily distinguished from other versions.7 prototypes were completed. However, the program was canceled after the break-up of the Soviet Union.
