The “Wasp” class (Type 021) missile boat, transferred by the Soviet Union in 1959, was equipped with 4 “Upstream-1” missiles, which were relatively advanced equipment at the time. The first ship was built by Shanghai Hudong Shipyard, launched in 1963, and entered service at the end of December 1965. This type of boat was fully localized in 1970, and the first boat was built by Xijiang Shipyard in 1971.
In the process of localization, Chinese technicians have also made many improvements to this type of boat. The main ones are: the development of a steel mast that can be lowered, the missile loading frame is changed to a short frame, and the manual retraction and anchoring are changed to anchors. The chain barrel is automatically launched and fired. The air-conditioning system is installed on the boats used in the south, and radio stations, reconnaissance radars, security machines, and other equipment are added. In 1975, this type of boat was finalized, and mass production began to be equipped with troops. A total of more than 98 ships were produced.
